WORKOUT FOR THE MIND AND SOUL

Our new blog promotes a workout to challenge yourself to memorize scripture. DON’T YOU THINK GOD WILL DELIGHT IN US MEMORIZING HIS PRECIOUS WORD?
Let me tell you a personal story about memory. I am on quite a few medications to stabilize my kidneys as a result of auto-immune problems. At the initial stages of my disease, the medications caused some memory loss and lack of “sharpness” of mind. Around this time, God lead me into tutoring mathematics after school. As I recalled and taught all the strands of math in the curriculum, my memory started getting better, my mind was sharper and I was absorbing information (esp. the news) better than ever before! Guess what? I started memorizing and recalling Bible scripture with more ease.

The tutoring was a workout for my mind and stretched it beyond what it was before. Memorizing scripture is another method to not only stretch the mind, but stretch the soul. God’s precious word is nutrition for our spirits.

Women are taking care of themselves more. We try to balance our carbs, protein and fats, and make sure our bodies are having adequate fruits and veggies. We stretch our muscles before a workout in order not to suffer injury, BUT WHAT ABOUT STRETCHING THE MIND?

WHEN THE ENEMY WANTS TO “INJURE” US SPIRITUALLY, YOU CAN TRIUMPH OVER HIM BY RECALLING THAT VERSE YOU MEMORIZED.

Prov. 3:19-26 and Prov. 4:13 say:

By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations,

By understanding he set the heavens in place;

By his knowledge the deeps were divided,

And the clouds let drop the dew.

My sons, preserve sound judgement and discernment,

Do not let them out of your sight,

They will be life for you,

An ornament to grace your neck.

Then you will go on your way in safety,

And your foot will not stumble;

When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Have not fear of sudden disaster

Or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,

For the Lord will be your confidence

And will keep your foot from being snared.

4:13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;

Guard it well, for it is your life.

WISDOM AND DISCERNMENT COME FROM KNOWING GOD’S WORD. HOLDING ON TO IT AND PRESERVING IT THROUGH MEMORY ENSURES A HEALTHY WALK THROUGH LIFE.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF!

God bless you all,

Tammy B.

  1. Thank you for sharing a part of your story. It always helps me when we can see how God works in another person's life. I just remember that He never changes, He is all powerful and He loves me with a measureless love. So, what He demonstrates in another person's life I know He can do it for me as well. That is why I enjoy reading the Bible stories - our (my) God can do for me what He has done for others before me. He may not, but at least I know He CAN! If He chooses to work differently in life then I know it has first been filtered through His love for me and out of a purpose for my good and His glory.

    Stretching is never easy. I have recently joined a wellness challenge at work and, amongst many activities, have once again started to walk and "stretch". OUCH!! It was so hard at first but did get easier as I got used to it again. I was reminded that David chose not to wear King Saul's armour in battle against Goliath because he was "not used to it". For so long I had assumed David did not wear the armour because it would not fit him - Saul being so much bigger than David. But, David said he was "not used to it". In Ephesians 6 we are told to put on the armour of God. If King Saul's armour wold not fit David I am sure God's armour would not fit us - but, that is not the reason given that David did not wear it. It was because he was "not used to it". I was challenged in my heart to get "used to" wearing the Lord's armour so that when I am in battle I can stand my ground against the enemy's schemes.

    Bless your for sharing!
