Siesta Bible Study Kick-Off

Good Morning!

Well, I just finished watching Beth's 11 minute DVD for the Intro Session of "Me, Myself & Lies". If you haven't watched it yet, you can see it here:

Siesta Summer Bible Study (Introduction) from LPV on Vimeo.

Because we are just beginning, today's session is a "get to know one another" session. It's going to be fun!!

Here's what we need to do (this is all from the video):
1. For an icebreaker, we need to each post what breed of dog we most resemble in our personality. If you don't know dog breeds, just describe your personality and the rest of us can make the decision!
2. Compose a text message (less than 160 characters) that starts with this: "Please pray for me. I..." This one will help us get know each others' priority needs.
3. Read Psalm 19 in The Message (Beth has the whole Psalm in her post or you can read it here from Bible Gateway.com). In your post, give one benefit of studying Scripture that is mentioned in the Psalm. If you have discovered that benfit personally, give us a short and specific testimony to encourage the rest of us.

So, in your comment, you can give your answers 1, 2, 3, or you can post a separate comment for each question - your choice!

Beth also asks for one person from each group to comment on her Blog and give a paragraph on some of what is discussed in our group. Let's take turns every 2 weeks! Who would like to do it for this session?
Oh, and if you're just getting here and would like to join in, please do! Add your name to our sign-up list by going to the post entitled "Sign Up Here for Summer Online Bible Study"

  2. I just removed my last comment because of too many typo's!!! : )
    1. Hmm....this is going to be difficult.
Well, even though I'm a dog-lover, I'd have to say my personality is more like a cat. Independent, don't mind being alone, can sometimes be perceived as being aloof. BUT give me a good neck rub and I'm content and your friend for life!!!
    2. Please pray for me. We are selling our house (its a slow market right now) and moving to be closer to my husband's work. I desperately need to trust God that in His wisdom, He will lead us to the place that is perfect for us.
    3. Verse 6 in Ps. 19 says that God's Word warms our heart to faith. That's what I experienced 5 years ago when I had gotten way off the beaten path. (See "about me" if you want the whole story) It was the Word of God that brought me back to Him and my family. Praise Him!

  3. 1. I'm not sure what kind of dog I have the demeanor of, I love to be with people, I am loyal, dependable and love to laugh and have fun. What dog is that?? We raised blue heelers and border collies so those are the dogs I know. I am not as growly as a blue heeler can be:), although they are very loyal, I definitely don't have the "energizer bunny" energy of a border collie!
    2. Please pray for me. I want to know the power of the Holy Spirit in my life and to live each day in that power.
    3. Verse 7 says that God's law revives our soul. That was my experience several years ago when my husband had a brain tumor and I was separated from him by his choice. It was an extremely difficult time for me and I survived by being in the Word. God taught me so much about Himself and about myself during that time. I wouldn't want to go back there but neither would I want to lose what He taught me then.

  5. I see on the LPL Blog Sign-Up Post , there is a "guestbook that you can sign and upload a picture to. If you want, go ahead and upload your individual photos, but if you haven't sent me a photo of yourself yet, please still send it. I'm making a collage, and when I have them all together, I'll upload that one onto the Guest Book!

  6. 1. I'm copying this from a "what breed of dog are you?" from Facebook. . . it appears I am most like a New Foundland! "you always want to lend a helping hand;at all times; in every circumstance that someone may be in need, even if there isn't any. 'No, I really don't need anything at the moment; thank you anyway.' "

  7. 2. Please pray 4 me. My health has declined again (not fatal, but chronic and keeps me homebound most of the time) and both my daughters are having their 1st baby this Aug/Sept -- one in AK and one in OR. I so want to be there!

  8. 1.I guess I would be a St. Bernard or one of those mountain resuce dogs. I have a heart to help others but have a really hard time excepting help for myself even when I need it.
2.Please pray for me I need clarity of mind and thoughts. My brain feels like a Yatzee shaker full of dice.
3.His Word shows the way to joy. In this fast paced, frantic stressed life that takes everything out of us, there is no place but the Word of God to show us how to really live and find joy, peace and love.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 3. . . .the lifemaps of God are right, showing the way to joy . . ." Even with my health declining, and I can't teach any more, and I'm home so much of the time, I KNOW that God has me where He wants me, to do what He wants me to do. That's where the joy is; that God wants me, not just what I can do.

  10. Okay first we have another Lynn so I am Lynn R from Oregon. :)
    1. what kind of dog - Help please:) I am calm most of the time but can be tenacious when needed. I can be content to spend time by myself and can entertain myself very nicely. I am a very good listener. I am very active but not hyper. (I like to always be doing something) I love crafts, reading, fishing, camping. Okay - What dog is that? :)
    2. Please pray for me - I want my children to start living for God. (They are all born again, just not walking the walk) :)
    3. Psalm 19 - vs 11 God word warns us of danger and directs us to hidden treasures.

I signed the guest book on the LPM blog. I do not have my book yet but will do the 1st two chapters when I do. Then are we

  12. Hi, Siestas,
My name is Gretchen, and I live in Thousand Oaks, CA. Would love to know where the rest of you live.

Just loved Beth's intro. What great questions! As for me, I'm probably most like a Great Dane. People tell me I look intimidating, but I'm really just a lap dog, a little timid, and a big old 'fraidy cat! Please pray for me. I'm really struggling in my relationship with the Lord. And finally, I like verse 9 - The decisions of God are accurate, down to the nth degree. I chose that because I haven't liked some of God's decisions in my life very much, and need reminding that His decisions are perfect and accurate.

Can't wait to see what our Lord will do this summer as we study the Word together!

Blessings to each of you, Sisters!

    Gretchen

  13. 1. I had to go on a site and take a "what dog breed are you" because I had no idea what my answer to this question is. Turns out I'm most like a poodle because, according to the quiz, I'm intelligent and like the finer things in life (who doesn't?). :) What a fun way to start a Bible study. :)

    2. Please pray for me. I am struggling with fear and anxiety that is affecting my life. Need freedom!!!

    3. God's Word is satisfaction. It's contentment. Studying God's Word reminds me that there is a bigger picture, and in the end, it's all going to come together for His glory.

  14. 1. I consider myself a labrador retriever. Fun-loving, good-natured. Love to help others in need and also playful.

    2. Please pray that I be a God-honoring wife to my husband as ministry challenges and focus so easily draw me away from this primary relationship I have under God.

    3. Verse 10 "You'll like "it" (God's Word), better than strawberries in Spring..." Right now it is strawberry season and I can hardly wait to get to the fields to pick and eat them! This study in God's Word is better than those strawberries and I can hardly wait to see what God is going to teach me through this study!

  15. I love all your answers! We have such a wide variety of puppies in our kennel!
Lynn R, I was going to suggest that you might be a Labrador Retriever also (see Michele's comment above)
we are still waiting to hear from a few more women, so let's hold off on our report until we hear from them.
Does everyone know how to receive the comments by email? At the very bottom of the page, there is a line that says "Subscribe to Post Comments". Just click on that.
Psalm 19 is such a wonderful reminder of the importance of God's Word. I found that reading it in The Message made some of the descriptions just jump out at me!
Praying for all of you dear Siestas - our Heavenly Father knows all of our concerns, fears, anxieties, dreams, plans and struggles. He is worthy of our trust!

  16. 1. I am a Boston Terrier! I love to be with family and suggle on the couch. I like to play outside for short periods of time and then come inside for a nap! Just like Bostons:)
    2. Please pray for me. I need prayer for physical strength and endurance to do what God has called me to do.
    3. I relate to the phrase God's Word warms hearts to faith.I have found that my faith grows as I spend time in God's Word. It's as if fertilizer is being applied to a tiny mustard seed. I also like the phrase "the life-maps of God are right showing the way to joy". I can testify that true joy only comes from following God and seeking HIs heart. If I am trying to please others or live up to expectations that don't come from God, then my life is full of stress. God is the only true source of joy!

  17. I also took a quizz online to see what dog breed I am and I was a labrador retriever. Lynn R I checked your blog and found it interesting that not only do we have the same name but we both enjoy quilting. I haven't done any in awhile but really enjoy it. Gretchen I live in Red Deer, Alberta.

  18. 1. Thank you Nightengale for the idea to go on line for a quiz!! I copied the following results from GoToQuiz – “You are a Lab, You are very loyal to your friends and family you always stick up for them. You are so playful that you tend to tire out most people. You don’t mind at all doing people favours, And if you hurt someone’s feelings you feel very bad.” I am not sure about tiring out most people though (unless it is with my talking!)
    2. Please pray for me. I want to ensure I continue to be committed to my quiet time with the Lord.
    3. In this blog’s Scripture Memory Workout my June 1st verse was Psalm 19:14. And here I am again back in this Psalm. When I re-read it to answer this question I focused on verse 7b – “The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” Every day I begin my study I use Beth’s prayer – “Lord make me smart – give me the Spirit of Revelation and Wisdom (Eph 1:17)”. He has been so faithful to grant me just the right words recently in several conversations with both believers and unbelievers. After the conversations were over I was in awe at His goodness. (I then reverted right back go my legally blond state!! – but praise Him – He was there when I needed His help to love the ladies I was speaking with!)

  19. My name is Mildred, I live in Mahomet,IL. I haven't had a dog since I was a young girl so I need help picking the bred. I would be a medium size, fairly low maintence fido that loves to take walks; a watch dog that is loyal.
    2. Please pray for me that the words of my mouth will be spoken with love and wisdom and will be void of any sinful nature.
    3. God's word is full of accurate signposts that lead us to wisdom and discernment and increased faith and joy. His word warns us of danger and directs us to hidden treasure. I'm blown away by this Psalm.

  20. 1) What dog? I think I would pick Dalmatian because that is what we have at our house in nepal. She’s always smiling and laughing and that would pretty much describe me. I have learned to laugh and smile and to live a “dancing kind of life”.. our dalmation is always dancing around happy!
    2) Please pray for me as I finish up my last weeks here having painful goodbyes but ready for glorious homecomings!
    3) What stuck out to me is when it said That’s how God’s word vaults across the skies. I have been serving God in nepal in a country very in bondage to the darkness of Hindism.. yet in this country you can look and SEE the glory of our one and only God as the Himilayan mountains stretch across the sky. In the times when I could see mt. Everest from my kitchen window Psalms 121 I will lift up my eyes to the hills from where does my help come from became soo real and true to me! Our God is truly an awesome creator.

  22. 1.i think i am most like a lab. kind of quiet and not wanting to cause any trouble!

    2. please pray for me as I truly want to be like Jesus. I want that truth and grace to be the mark of my life.

3."Clean the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh!
    Keep me from stupid sins,
    from thinking I can take over your work;
Then I can start this day sun-washed,
scrubbed clean of the grime of sin.
    These are the words in my mouth;
these are what I chew on and pray."

i need these words to keep myself focused, so i won't slip on the tangents of wrongdoing and wrong thinking!

  24. I love how spread out we are and yet able to connect in this way! I am 58 yr. (I can say that for 1 more month!)I have 2 sons and a daughter, 9 grandkids, 2 daughters-in-law. I have been widowed for over 5 yrs. I love being a grandma, but I don't live very close to any of my grandkids so the time I am able to spend with them is precious. I am taking two of my granddaughters (9 & 10yrs) with me to visit my sister for a week and I know we'll have a blast together. They are so much fun and get along very well. I am so thankful for the opportunity to study the Word with all of you and to get to know each other in the process.

  25. What a privelage to do this with ya'll!
    1. Took the online quiz. I'm not an animal lover; the "quiz" says I'm a german shepard (with coon hound a close second? lovely) From the site: You're loyal, protective, and strong. A police dog that loves to play and work. You take care of your friends and family. You are alwaysfun to be around and you like to get the paper! OK. . .
    2. Please pray for me as I need to replace some lies with truth. I've made agreements with the enemy (Eldridge, anyone?) and I need to break those and replace them with truth. Hard stuff.
    3. From Psalm 19:11, 13: By his ordinances, I am warned, and in keeping them is great reward (fellowship with Him). Keep me from willful sins, may they not rule over me. Reminds me of Romans 6. Good stuff.

  26. Hi I finally got my book and am excited to start my homework. I can hear my parents now and I'm in my 40's "Wish you would have been that excited about homework when you were in school" ha ha .

Hey can those of you that haven't listed where you are from do so I am having fun journaling where we are from and what dogs we are. I would like to see where we start and how we change.

Also on the "Please pray for me... I listed my children.. but I saw one that said to help them watch their mouth, that would be my other pray for me. I work in an office that can tend to judge and gossip, it is easy to want to get caught up in that but I don't want to. so that would be a good "Pray for me too".
Okay off to do homework... let us know where you are from. Thanks,

Right now we have been without water for a full week.. cannot get any and if it does not rain.. well I'm stinky! last year in june we went the whole month. Pray for our patience as we cannot shower, flush or brush! :-)

  31. Oh Jenn - my heart goes out to you! I can't even imagine what it would be like to be absolutely without water! I pray Isaiah 49:9-11 for you and those you are with: "They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat upon them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water."
God, forgive me for whining about having a bad hair day and fussing about having a husband who is always late for dinner!!!
Well, God has been answering our prayers already. Our books are still not in, but Jennifer has provided week one of the book to download and print as a freebie! See the link in June's post above if you still need the book. (Jenn - this is perfect for you seeing as you can't even get a book!)
Okay, now I can get started too!
Watch for a new post for Week One comments & discussion, where we can ask questions, talk about what we're learning, and share prayer requests.

  36. 1. My husband says I am likened to a goldenshepherd. He says I am loyal, strong, can be fierce yet incredibly lovable, kind, gentle, willing to lead yet will obediently follow. (haven't had time to process this one)

    2. Please pray for me and my two girls and husband as we move to London in a month. A whole new start to our lives that we are trusting the Lord with.

    3. The decisions of God are accurate down to the nth degree. (totally trustin Him on that one!)

  37. Carla, I am trusting the above post is your's as well. When I read this one I put 2+2 together because of your prayer request. Just when I am moving up you are moving away - Boo Hoo - but, God's decisions are wise! Welcome aboard!

  39. 1. Perhaps a Bassett as I'm sappy and get excited over the tiniest little thing but yet if I'm on the hunt, watch out because my nose is on the ground and I'm gone. ie: if I start a project...then it consumes me until I'm done instead of being luxurious and taking my time.

    2. You can pray for me as we have just closed our business doors April 30th, which happened to be our 63rd year in business; and so am retired and desiring to be about what God wants me to be about. I've worked with-in our business for 22 years and my husband 35 years. We retired the same day so not really any transition time but as you can see, 22 years we have worked together, side by side.

    3. vs 11: There's more: God's Word warns us of danger and directs us to hidden treasure.

Often times we think of being obedient to God as costly and pride will stand in the way because of our FLESH. But when we submit, there is such a sweet hidden treasure and it doesn't cost us because we soon realize God desires what is best for us and He really isn't out to hurt us.
